Quantifying In from a Fregean Perspective

چکیده
This is the reading where the quantifier is naturally understood as taking wide scope relative to the attitude verb and as binding a variable within the scope of the attitude verb. This reading is usually called the de re reading. In this essay, I am interested in addressing the question: what should the semantic analysis of this kind of reading look like from a Fregean perspective—a perspective according to which attitude states are generally relations to structured Fregean thoughts, themselves composed of senses? The question was broached by Kaplan (1968), who sketched some natural ideas about the target truth-conditions for such ascriptions. He did not address the issue of how his broadly Fregean truth-conditions

Quantifying Investment in Language Learning: Model and Questionnaire Development and Validation in the Iranian Context
The present exploratory study aimed to provide a more tangible and comprehensive picture of the construct of investment in language learning through investigating the issue from a quantitative perspective. To this end, the present researchers followed three main phases. First, a hypothesized model of investment in language learning with six components was developed for the Iranian English as a ...
متن کاملA defence of Fregean propositions
Stephen Schiffer 2003 presents six arguments against the Fregean model of propositions, according to which propositions are (a) the referents of that-clauses and (b) structured entities made out of concepts. Schiffer advances an alternative view: propositions are unstructured pleonastic entities. My purpose is to argue in favour of the main tenets of the Fregean model by countering each of Schi...
متن کاملFregean logics
According to Frege’s principle the denotation of a sentence coincides with its truthvalue. The principle is investigated within the context of abstract algebraic logic, and it is shown that taken together with the deduction theorem it characterizes intuitionistic logic in a certain strong sense. A 2nd-order matrix is an algebra together with an algebraic closed set system on its universe. A ded...
متن کاملBOOK REVIEWS About a mature theory of Fregean sense
The book develops a theory of Fregean sense to a mature form. It consists of only five chapters, which is perhaps surprising given its volume. The first chapter, “A programme of general semantics”, describes the philosophical foundations of procedural semantics informally and then presents the technical fundamentals of this programme. This chapter is crucial for the comprehension of the book, a...
متن کاملColour constancy and Fregean representationalism
All representationalists maintain that there is a necessary connection between an experience’s phenomenal character and intentional content; but there is a disagreement amongst representationalists regarding the nature of those intentional contents that are necessarily connected to phenomenal character. Russellian representationalists maintain that the relevant contents are composed of objects ...
